with Vince Anderson,
Texas A&M University Assistant Track Coach;
Back-to-Back-to-Back Men's & Women's NCAA Champions (2011, 2010, 2009)

Develop technically sound and fast hurdlers using the coaching philosophy and drill progressions from the back-to-back-to-back NCAA National Championship staff at Texas A&M.

Vince Anderson stresses the connection between hurdling and sprinting throughout the video. He gives you drills in five major areas related to hurdling and ends with four exercises that will develop the strength and athletic ability needed for hurdling.

You don't need to master a ton of drills and techniques to improve your hurdling. Coach Anderson will show you how to use fewer drills and get better results. Using this refined approach and training an equal number of speed days, your hurdlers will see faster times--and you will produce an overall better conditioned athlete.

Speed and coordination are equally essential in the development of the 'sprint' hurdler. Anderson trains his hurdlers as sprinters versus training them as hurdlers who do some sprint work.

Through these drills, Coach Anderson will show you how to:

  • Move hurdlers from 4 steps to 3 steps between hurdles
  • Develop speed between hurdles
  • Break down the phases of the trail leg and increase acceleration after the hurdle
  • Develop overall athletic ability - a key to hurdling
Included in this video are the topics on Hurdle Variables, Mobility Training, Frequency Drills, Hurdle Approaches, Speed Hurdling and Strength Based Exercises.

Coach Anderson explains how the athletes will develop in the drill areas, throughout the season, and passes along modifications you can make in order to assist development. These modifications will assist coaches at different levels in effectively using the drills. Anderson inserts coaching points throughout the video to supplement the demonstrations by both a male and female collegiate hurdler. He also shares how you can adapt the drills to your athletes' level!

Packed full of useful skills and drills, this video will help all level of athletes and coaches improve not only their speed, but there hurdle technique as well. Whether you are a developmental, collegiate, or sub-elite athlete, the skills and techniques shown in this video will help make you not only faster, but technically proficient as well.

TD-02521A: with Marcus O'Sullivan,
Villanova Head Track & Field and Head Men's Cross Country Coach,
4 X Olympian, 3 X World Champion,
100 Sub 4-minute miles in a 15 year pro career,
voted NCAA National Cross Country Coach of the Year in 1998.

One of the sport's most successful runner turned coach, Marcus O'Sullivan's mastery and understanding of Lactate Threshold Training for middle distance and distance runners has made him one of the most sought after clinicians in the country! O'Sullivan has a special gift of taking the science of physiology and translating it into easy-to-understand terminology, which can be applied to all levels. The key to threshold training is getting a firm grasp on the energy systems. In Part 1, O'Sullivan explains the basic physiology of the Phosphate System, the Oxygen System, and the Lactate System. With a basic understanding of these systems, you will be able to identify the threshold "line" that is the key element in prescribing appropriate training on an individual basis for each athlete. The athletes' appropriate pace is then determined by using heart rate as well as time formulas. Marcus leaves "no stone unturned" as he includes strategies for training that are systems appropriate. He will share with you a workout plan that will include the frequency and volume of a threshold workout, ultimately leading to less injury and the avoidance of overtraining. This video gives you the tools to incorporate a science with practicality for your athletes!

TD-02521B: with Marcus O'Sullivan,
Villanova Head Track & Field and Head Men's Cross Country Coach,
4 X Olympian, 3 X World Champion,
100 Sub 4-minute miles in a 15 year pro career,
voted NCAA National Cross Country Coach of the Year in 1998.

The focus of this presentation is on anaerobic work, i.e. work that takes place "above the aerobic/anaerobic threshold line." Before O'Sullivan discusses actual anaerobic training, he shares the set-up of a training plan for the season, working back from the peak meet, including a seasonal breakdown of appropriate training phases helping to establish a solid aerobic base; Marcus presents a wide variety of anaerobic workouts which will help increase the VO2 max and the anaerobic capacity of the athlete. His delivery includes lactate infusion and diffusion - getting the athlete to build lactate in order to teach him/her to diffuse the lactate acid. Throughout the presentation, O'Sullivan offers caution regarding the hazards of over training in this energy system and offers strategies that will allow adequate recovery to avoid overtraining an athlete prior to his or her most important competition. O'Sullivan also presents workout sets that target specific race distances for the middle distance runner. He presents a segment on the importance of speed development, suggesting specific ideas to help increase and enhance the speed of the athlete without it becoming a detriment to the overall performance.

TD-02521C: with Marcus O'Sullivan,
Villanova Head Track & Field and Head Men's Cross Country Coach,
4 X Olympian, 3 X World Champion,
100 Sub 4-minute miles in a 15 year pro career,
voted NCAA National Cross Country Coach of the Year in 1998.

In this presentation O'Sullivan delves deeply and precisely into a narrow and targeted focus for threshold training. He begins with a brief review of the basics of lactate training including the three energy systems used in training and their relationship to understanding how to streamline training around the "aerobic/anaerobic line." Through all of the physiological discussion, you will greatly benefit from O'Sullivan's unique knack of making the complexities of the science simple to grasp and understand. The overall goal of threshold training is to try to get the heart stronger allowing it to pump more blood, carry more oxygen, and do more work, and hence run faster. Through this methodology the athlete will run consistently faster and further throughout each season during the career of the athlete. The "advanced" aspect of the presentation is in its specificity with regard to training as it relates to an athlete's particular event. O'Sullivan includes sample workout sets that are event specific, with detailed outline on how to increase the production level of a threshold workout without adding to the volume. He deals with training each system as it fits with a season and a segment of the season. He also shares considerations for a long and short season and how competition fits into the training equation.

Coach Lane introduces a thrower-specific warm-up that includes various hurdle exercises, dynamic stretching exercises, a strength building lunge matrix, and that stresses the concept of kinetic linking (firing the muscles in proper order for a successful throw) with drills. Her warm-up is both perfect for a general muscle warm-up and for preparing the nervous system for the high-powered speed needed to throw successfully!

Lane introduces the correct grip of the discus and drills to develop this skill. She also introduces standing throws, with relevant coaching points and cues to develop the proper posture and positioning to ensure quality throws. By using the "Toe-Knee-Hip" concept, she gives athletes and coaches a valuable and easy set of cues to set up a strong throw. The Wheel Drill, Spider-Man Drill, and variations of the South African drill are all demonstrated with coaching points addressed.

Another unique feature of this video is the segment on five common problems that face many beginning throwers. Lane explains the issues and provides suggestions and drills that can be used to fix them. This information is invaluable for the beginning coach or athlete. Lane includes a Preparing for Competition section that features ideas on how to properly prepare for the stresses and challenges of competing under pressure, and gives valuable hints for coaching your throwers at meets.

This outstanding video is great for both the experienced and beginning coach, and will help you to develop championship discus throwers!

Teach your athletes specific drills that will improve their sprint mechanics, acceleration and maximum velocity -- and lower their sprint times!

Though practice footage with athletes at Texas A&M, Head Coach Pat Henry takes a coach step by step through many of the drills that produced his successful sprinters and relay teams.

With sprinting, Henry goes through three distinct areas of successful sprinting: the proper block start, the keys to acceleration, and maintaining top end speed throughout the race. Henry takes the viewer through each step in the process he uses to teach the correct way for an athlete to best use the blocks. Henry uses various drills to teach proper foot placement, the correct shin angles at the set position, and foot contacts out of the blocks.

In teaching acceleration, Henry shows the viewer the various drills and cues used to achieve the best drive phase for a sprinter. With top end speed work, Henry goes through his wicket drill that he uses with all his male and female athletes at Texas A&M. The wicket drill provides a process for a sprinter to learn the proper stride rate and frequency through the top end speed phase of the race.

In the relays, Henry explains the process he uses to set up a successful 4x100m relay. Henry provides the viewer the proper place to start for each exchange, how to best accelerate through the exchange zone, and how to handle the baton between each runner.

This video will help you get the very best times out of your sprinters and relays. 64 minutes. 2012.

    TD-03993B: with Vince Anderson,
    Texas A&M University Assistant Track Coach;

Cultivate the knowledge necessary to achieve your personal best in the high jump!

Texas A&M jumps coach Jim VanHootegem presents a comprehensive overview of the fundamentals, mechanics, skills and drills involved in optimizing a mechanically sound high jump. These are the same drills and progressions that Texas A&M used to win back-to-back-to-back men's and women's NCAA outdoor championships.

Using practice footage, Coach VanHootegem delivers a solid, high jump fundamentals base from which any athlete can benefit. Each aspect of the high jump is explained along with drills to aid in teaching each key point in the event. Among the topics covered are the crossover squat walk, circle runs, figure eights, transitioning from the straight line to a curve, the 10-step approach, curve initiation, the scissor jump, run-throughs and hurdle drills.

You will learn how to initiate and execute the approach from start to takeoff. Special attention is given to initiating the curved portion of the approach through to the takeoff. Proper ground mechanics are covered in-depth as they are critical to set up the correct takeoff and flight actions. VanHootegem demonstrates several drills that can be used to perfect this critical component of the high jump. Scissor jumps, as well as traditional flop jumps, are also included.

Multi-jump activities are taught thoroughly covering what the athlete should feel prior to contacting the ground and during impact. When executed correctly, the leg will function like a spring and impact forces will be distributed evenly through the hip, knee, and ankle.

Throughout the video VanHootegem suggests real-time technical corrections after the jumper's attempts. This feedback will provide you with word cues and things to look for in your jumpers. He also provides a tip to be used in competition that will allow your jumper to get some run-throughs regardless of the bar height during warm-ups.

This DVD, which is designed for both coaches and athletes at all competitive levels, demonstrates how coaches can train their athletes to maximize their performance.

With a focus on speed mechanics and positioning, Jim VanHootegem teaches and demonstrates the drills he uses to develop championship-caliber jumpers.

Following an introductory warm-up phase, Coach VanHootegem focuses on sprint mechanics drills. These drills are used as a teaching tool to train your athletes to achieve a consistent tempo or rhythm during during the approach run. These drills train essential muscle groups to work together in concert.

With the approach run are broken down into sections, VanHootegem provides tips on how to get an accurate approach distance for your athletes. He includes the wall drill as a progression in teaching the athlete how to transition from pure acceleration mechanics to a near max-velocity position during the approach.

Takeoff progressions are delivered moving from slow walking to skipping to running drills. The emphasis throughout the drills is on achieving high hips and the feet low to the ground-low heel recovery with the swing or drive leg. Also emphasized is the actions of the feet in both landings and takeoffs.

VanHootegem uses low hurdles to instill a sense of rhythm in the jumper and to achieve multiple repeated takeoffs and landings. He demonstrates the importance of the takeoff leg/foot in achieving a big split and ensuring complete extension of the takeoff action. Finishing out the video he demonstrates some bounding and positioning drills he uses to enforce good landings between phases and to improve strength.

A multi-jumps section progression moves from double leg and simple to single leg, more complex and more specific to the demands of the events. Some static and dynamic jumps are used both alone and together. In the standing triple jump progression the emphasis moves from a vertical action to a more horizontal action covering increasingly greater distances. A progression of bounds is shown moving from baby bounds to longer bounds and also scissors or straight leg bounds.

    Elite Athlete Coach and Coordinator at the ZAP Fitness Team USA Training Center;
Since 2002, Coach Rea has guided more than 36 athletes to Olympic Trials berths (1500m to marathon); coach of Tyler Pennell, 2014 USATF Marathon Champion and member of the World Half Marathon Team

    and Ryan Warrenburg,
Zap Fitness Strength Coach; steeplechase finalist at the 2009 USATF Championships; All-American runner at Arizona State University

Pete Rea, head coach of the highly successful Zap Distance Running Group, covers the ins and outs of total body training for beginning and advanced distance runners.

    Training Methods

In this video, Coach Rea reveals the secrets behind his training methods, the different types of workouts you can use within a single training session, and discusses how you can implement them with the individual runner. The bulk of his training ideologies are based on Arthur Lydiard's training theories.

There are various types of workouts that should be done at different points during the year. Coach Rea shares specific workouts and does a great job explaining when and why each workout should be done. He even goes over an ideal world vs. real world scenario of the training.

Coach Rea also explains the difference between coaching high school, college and elite runners. He explains the differences in training, mileage, seasons, and races and the differences between the athletes and how coaches can work with them.

Included is a definition of the "snowball' effect, a philosophy that focuses on teaching your athletes to progressively get faster by concentrating on starting off at a much slower pace. This helps prevent blowing up the race at the end due to fatigue or lack of experience.

    Coach Rea also discusses:

    • The challenges facing successful runners
    • Mistakes runners and coaches make
    • Individual and team goal setting
    • Arthur Lydiard's influence on his program
    • The 7 secrets behind becoming a successful runner

    Live Workouts

Covering two days of practice, Coach Rea shows different workouts being performed by team members at Zap. He covers the basics behind a proper warm-up, then explains a typical interval day and a recovery day in his program. After watching the workouts, Rea reviews what his athletes accomplished during the workout.

    Core Workout

Developing overall body and core strength is vital for improved running. Ryan Warrenburg, Zap Fitness strength coach, takes you to the weight room and demonstrates 10 core strengthening exercises that emphasize muscle activation and posture.

Learn how to stay healthy and injury-free by emphasizing good posture, teaching the muscles to activate properly, and working them in a sequence by following this simple core routine. Coach Warrenburg explains how these core exercises will teach your athletes to relax during the running movement, emphasize good running form, and generate power.

The Zap coaches do an excellent job of explaining the hows and whys of distance training using an educational approach.

Whether you are a new coach or athlete, or an experienced veteran, there is plenty to learn in this comprehensive and easy to understand video that will help you improve your performance.

High School Coach's Blueprint for Success: Pole Vault

    with Tim Reilly

This information-packed presentation features one of the county's most prolific high school pole vault coaches, Tim Reilly.

Coach Reilly outlines the realities of coaching an 11 week high school season and the challenges this poses for successfully coaching the pole vault event. He touches on recruiting the best possible athletes for the event, having a system in place to simultaneously work with experienced and beginning vaulters, and coaching with safety at the forefront of every aspect of the event.

Reilly breaks his classroom discussion into six segments:

    • An 8-phase Safety Protocol - This information is at the heart of the pole vault coach's certification program Reilly was instrumental in developing in Washington.
    • Metronome Principal - A clear and easy way to understand the physics of the pole vault.
    • Four Foundations of Success - An invaluable narrated film analysis of the four fundamentals for success in the pole vault--approach, plant, take-off and follow through.
    • Team Training - Learn essential strategies for daily team training including managing rainy days, injury days and windy days.
    • Meet Preparation - Includes a quiz to help athletes with pole selection and pole management at meets.
    • Common Bad Habits - Learn to correct four of the most common "bad habits" for vaulters.
    • Practice Schedule - Reilly breaks down the 11-week season into a four cycle flow. With each cycle, he presents an example of a complete week of lesson plans for his practice routine. Reilly also includes how he peaks his athletes for the championship phase of the season.
On the track, Reilly demonstrates more than 75 drills and variations for teaching and coaching the pole vault. These drills are broken into the following sections:
    • Approach Drills (18 drills). Progress from simple walking single leg drills and sequencing through a progression that ends with a complete approach with the pole drop into a sliding box plant.
    • Plant Drills and Plant Sequence Drills (10). Plant drills begin at the most elementary level in the sand and progress to a 3-step with 1/4 swing. The plant sequence drills include a 4-drill teaching sequence.
    • Take-Off Drills (8). These drills are designed to give the pole vaulter the feeling of a long jump style take-off and focus on getting the athlete to transition the horizontal approach velocity to a vertical take-off impulse.
    • Follow Through Drills (6). This drill progression is designed to assist the vaulter in building the sensation of a stretched out and firm body position when transitioning from the take off into the pre-swing position.
    • Swing Drills (7). This drill progression begins on the hi-bar and rings before progressing into the swing and turn on a straight, then bending pole.
    • Strength Development Drills (27). Reilly's pole vault specific strength development is designed to be carried out predominately on the track rather spending a great deal of time in the weight room.
Tim Reilly has coached thousands of pole vaulters in his career. Now you can benefit from Reilly's rich history and success in coaching the pole vault.

    with Mike Garcia,
    Lanphier (IL) High School Head Track & Field Coach;
2009 Illinois Track & Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame inductee

More than just a technique video, this DVD explores an entire high jump program.

Mike Garcia begins with a classroom overview of coaching the high jump and how to look for athletes who possess the attributes needed to successfully high jump.

    Seasonal Planning and Organization
Garcia focuses his planning around a traditional high school season--8-10 weeks on the track with training beginning in late February. Garcia breaks down the season into a 3-phase training plan:

    • The Habit Phase - This early season phase focuses on conditioning and establishing consistent approaches by forming good habits. Consistent approaches lead to consistent heights!
    • Mid-Season Phase - A 3-4 week phase characterized by "developmental meets" and hard training.
    • Championship Phase - This focuses on fine tuning for regional and state championship competition.
A day-by-day sample plan for a typical week in each phase is provided. Garcia also shares his in-season and off-season strength training protocol for his high jumpers.

    Creating Workouts
Garcia discusses how he constructs his practices. He details strategies for general warm-up, high jump specific technique and training, as well as the importance of the end of practice time where excellent coach-athlete communication opportunities exist. Included in this segment are strategies to most effectively accommodate both novice jumpers and elite jumpers at the same time.

    On the Track Segment
Garcia provides a step-by-step overview of how he teaches the event, identifies common mistakes that rob your athletes of success, and discusses strategies for jumping order and passing.

In the drill segment, Garcia delivers curve drills, basketball drills, wall drill, circle drill, pit drill, 3 and 4 step drills and approach drills. He then breaks down several full jumps narrating each jump and sharing invaluable coaching points on each jump. He follows with a hurdle drill that he utilizes at practice and at meets that are especially good to execute between jumps.

Garcia concludes his presentation by sharing his "best practice" strategies for successful meet days.
